Dental Crowns
Boulder, Colorado
Dental crowns are an excellent way to repair cracked, broken, decayed, or worn teeth. Your dental crown will help restore strength, structure, and function to your tooth, protecting it from additional damage down the road.
Boulder cosmetic dentist, Dr. Gerald B. Savory, may recommend a dental crown:
- To protect a weak tooth from breakage or decay
- To restore a broken or worn down tooth
- To cover and support a tooth with a large dental filling when minimal natural tooth structure remains
- To hold a dental bridge in place
- To cover a misshaped or discolored tooth
- To act as a prosthetic tooth after receiving a dental implant
- To keep your teeth from shifting and causing a change in your bite if you have lost a tooth
Dental Crown Options
Dr. Savory makes most crowns in-office. He offers gold crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and all-ceramic crowns. All dental crowns not made in-house are crafted at Professional Dental Arts in Lafayette or at Massey Dental Studio in Ft. Collins. Dr. Savory has worked with these dental labs for many years, and they have always delivered exquisite results.
High noble metals are used for all gold and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. In general, all-ceramic crowns will provide you with the best aesthetic results. Dr. Savory can precisely match the shade of your porcelain crown with the natural color of your adjacent teeth.
On occasion, Dr. Savory will also offer plastic crowns. These are provisional restorations for patients with limited finances. Your plastic crown can last between one and two years. It is an excellent holding pattern before your permanent crown is installed.
Your Dental Crown Procedure
Your dental crown procedure will generally be completed in two office visits. In your first visit, Dr. Savory will prepare your tooth by cleaning out any areas where decay is present and removing some of your natural tooth structure in order to properly accommodate your crown. He will then take an impression of your tooth which will be used to construct your crown. A temporary crown is placed on your tooth in order to protect it while your permanent one is being made.
Once your dental crown has been created, you will return to our office for your second visit. Dr. Savory will bond the crown to your tooth and make sure it properly balances your bite.
