Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning

Boulder, Colorado

It is important to develop good oral hygiene practices. Failure to do so can result in serious damage to your teeth and gums such as tooth decay, gum disease, missing teeth, and bone loss. These issues will lead to more expensive dental procedures in the future, and they can be very harmful to your overall general health.

For this reason, it is essential that you learn how to properly care for your teeth and gums. As part of your dental care, Boulder family dentist, Dr. Gerald B. Savory, will spend the necessary time to educate you about proper dental hygiene practices to ensure that you maintain healthy teeth and gums for a long time.

Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing at least twice a day are an important part of your regular dental hygiene regimen. It will help keep your teeth and gums healthy so that they function properly for years to come.

You should keep the following tips in mind when brushing your teeth:

  • Use a manual, electric, or ultrasonic toothbrush – we highly recommend the last option
  • Brush gently, but firmly
  • Brush all the surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and biting surface
  • Make sure the bristles stay at a 45 degree angle to your teeth
  • Make sure you reach all of your teeth, including your hard-to-reach back teeth
  • Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth – a tongue scraper can also prove to be very helpful with the hygiene for your tongue and may reduce bad breath, known as halitosis

It is also important to floss at least once a day as well. Flossing removes food and plaque between your teeth. Brushing alone will not be sufficient to reach plaque and bacteria in the crevices between your teeth.

Keep the following tips in mind when flossing:

  • Gently move the floss back and forth between your teeth
  • Do not snap the floss down between your teeth – this may irritate your gums
  • If you have a hard time flossing, try using disposable floss picks

In addition, it is a good idea to rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bad breath and further disinfect your teeth and gums.

Regular Dental Cleanings

Regular brushing and flossing will not be sufficient to maintain proper oral health. It is also important to visit Dr. Savory twice a year for dental cleanings. These visits to our office are crucial to removing the buildup of tartar that can lead to gum disease.

Furthermore, coming for regular dental checkups will ensure that we catch any oral health issues in their earliest stages of development. This will enable us to use the least invasive treatment methods possible to correct the condition.

If you ever notice a problem with your oral health such as broken or chipped teeth, gum discoloration, gum sensitivity, or loose teeth, you should visit our office immediately so that Dr. Savory can prevent unnecessary additional damage.
