Gum Disease
Boulder, Colorado
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an infection affecting the tissues and bones surrounding your teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can result in serious oral health complications, such as tooth loss.
There are essentially two stages of gum disease:
- Gingivitis – A mild form of gum disease affecting only your gums. It causes red, swollen gums that are prone to bleeding.
- Periodontitis – A more severe form of gum disease that affects the tissues and bone supporting your teeth. Periodontitis can cause your gums to recede from your teeth, making them look longer than they actually are. Over time, your teeth may become loose and fall out.
Causes of Gum Disease
Your mouth regularly produces plaque, a sticky substance containing bacteria. The bacteria in plaque can irritate and break down your gums. If you do not diligently remove plaque from your teeth, it will harden and form a substance called tartar. Once plaque becomes tartar, it can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. Over time, plaque and tartar can spread from your gums to the underlying bone structure, causing additional damage that may result in tooth loss.
You may be at an increased risk of developing gum disease if you:
- Do not maintain good oral hygiene habits
- Smoke or chew tobacco
- Have a genetic predisposition to gum disease
- Have a condition which impacts your body’s ability to fight infection
