Questions about Dental Implants
Boulder, Colorado
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a replacement for a missing tooth. It consists of three components:
- A titanium implant which gets inserted into and fuses with your jawbone
- A titanium post, called an abutment, which attaches to the implant and holds your prosthetic tooth
- A dental crown, which serves as your new prosthetic tooth
Who is a candidate for dental implants?
Almost anyone who is missing one or more teeth may be a candidate for dental implants. However, it is important that you have enough bone structure in your jaw to support the implant. If you lack sufficient jawbone density, Dr. Savory may recommend dentures or dental bridges as an alternative to dental implants.
Does Dr. Savory perform the entire dental implant procedure?
No. Boulder cosmetic dentist, Dr. Gerald B. Savory, only performs the restoration portion of your dental implant procedure. He will refer you to an oral surgeon or select periodontist for the implant portion of the procedure. Dr. Savory believes that this is the best way for you to achieve exceptional results with every phase of your procedure.
How long will my dental implants last?
If you have good jawbone health, your dental implant should last for the rest of your life. However, it is important to engage in good oral hygiene practices to ensure the lasting health of your teeth, gums, and bone structure.
How do I care for my dental implants?
You care for your dental implants just as if they were your natural teeth. You should brush and floss at least twice a day and visit Dr. Savory twice a year for regular dental check-ups.
What are All-on-Four dental implants?
All-on-Four dental implants are a specialized procedure that uses four dental implants to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth. This procedure can be performed even if you do not possess the proper bone density to support a traditional implant, and it is an excellent option if you are missing a full arch of teeth. Dr. Savory regularly performs All-on-Four implant procedures and achieves excellent results. At your initial consultation, he will advise you as to whether this is the right procedure for you.
What are mini-implants?
Mini-implants are used to stabilize dentures. They are a less expensive alternative to full-sized implants, and the procedure can be completed in one visit to Dr. Savory’s office. Mini-implants eliminate the months of healing time associated with traditional dental implants, and they help preserve bone structure when used in conjunction with dentures, providing for a more stable restoration. At your initial consultation, Dr. Savory will advise you as to whether mini-implants are an appropriate option for you.
